Who's Who in America, 43rd edition, 1984-1985. Chicago: Marquis Who's Who.

The current edition of Who's Who in America is available in any library, and the full text entries can be searched on-line by using Knowledge Index (available through CompuServe). The biographies are accurate, as they are almost always submitted by the person in question.

PIR has some older sets of Who's Who in America, and finds them indispensable for resolving namesakes, spelling errors, and similar data- entry problems. If a name is already in NameBase, and we have occasion to discover that it is also in one of our editions of Who's Who in America, we will often add this as a citation.

We also used the on-line searching to extract names of individuals with certain keywords in their biographies, such as CIA, OSS, Rand Corporation, Mitre Corporation, NSC, Radio Liberty and Radio Free Europe. Without the on-line access it would take several months to read 75,000 tiny-print biographies.
