FAIR describes itself as "the national media watch group offering well-documented criticism in an effort to correct bias and imbalance. FAIR focuses public awareness on the narrow corporate ownership of the press, the media's allegiance to official agendas and their insensitivity to women, labor, minorities and other public interest constituencies. FAIR seeks to invigorate the First Amendment by advocating for greater media pluralism and the inclusion of public interest voices in national debates."

Each issue of Extra! is about 25 pages and contains a dozen or more short articles that frequently offer commentary on some recent media oversight or indulgence. Usually only one or two articles are of interest to NameBase. Since Extra! started in 1987, its content has shifted somewhat from national-security issues and power-structure research to topics that reflect the culturally-diverse concerns of its progressive constituency. This leveling is difficult to resist within the philanthropy-dependent Left, despite the presumed orientations of executive director Jeff Cohen and publisher Martin Lee. Both of them come out of an earlier progressive tradition of investigative journalism with a harder core, but apparently FAIR is not the appropriate vehicle for continuing in this direction.
