The Christic Institute was a public-interest litigation and policy center headed by lawyer Daniel Sheehan, his wife Sara Nelson, and William J. Davis, then a Jesuit priest. Before Iran-contra broke, Christic was suing selected ex-CIA cowboys on behalf of an injured party in a 1984 bombing at La Penca that targeted Eden Pastora, who had fallen out of favor with the CIA. After Iran-contra broke, Christic found itself with a head start on the mass-media wolf pack that was hungry for tidbits. Sheehan's charismatic speeches parlayed this advantage into a fervent national following.
Christic made massive improvements in the affidavit as they became
familiar with the historical record by taking depositions, consulting
experts, and doing research. In the beginning they had discovered a
"secret team" that was all-powerful, and one wondered how any legal system
could be expected to risk its own existence by ruling against such a team
in a mere civil proceeding. Christic's situation is that of an optimistic
Teilhardian liberalism that suddenly discovers the clandestine state, but
doesn't know what to do about it. In spite of this, they've managed over
the years to make a positive contribution. -- D.Brandt
