Founded in 1907, "Baltimore Magazine" must hold the longevity title among the nation's "city" magazines. The contents of its present incarnation are pretty much indistinguishable from those of similar magazines in other cities: restaurant reviews, calendars of events, suck-up portraits of local bankers and doctors and other worthies, tips on real estate, reports on the local arts-and-music scene, and yet more restaurant reviews.

As of 1992, "Baltimore" has been acquired by a group led by the redoubtable Susan Sounders Obrecht. Obrecht has announced the appointment of my old friend Craig Stoltz, former editor of the late "Washington Dossier," as managing editor. Still, given the funkiness of its namesake city, it's difficult to see how "Baltimore" can get much slicker than it currently is.

But a good investigative article can turn up almost anywhere, which is how "Baltimore" finds itself cited in NameBase. -- Steve Badrich
