U.S. State Department. Foreign Service List. April, 1964. 118 pages.

Until about 1975, the Foreign Service List was issued quarterly and contained a fairly complete listing of U.S. personnel in each country who were officially posted there by the State Department: foreign service officers (divided into executive, political, economic, and administrative sections), military and agricultural attaches, and personnel from the Agency for International Development, U.S. Information Agency, and Peace Corps. The individual's name and rank are included, as well as the date that they were first assigned to that country.

This would make for dull reading, except that the foreign service officers with an "R" (Reserve) rank are usually CIA officers under State Department cover, particularly if they are listed in the political section. This fun fact became so useful that in the mid-1970s these lists were discontinued.

The list is in two sections: alphabetical by country and alphabetical by individual's name with a reference back to the country. Our copy of this April, 1964 list is missing pages 49 through 85, which means the countries after Sweden and the names in front of "Guaderrama." Still, we plucked out the likely spooks and included some AID public safety advisors for good measure.
