Back Channels: A Quarterly Publication of Historical/Modern Espionage,
Assassinations and Conspiracies, P.O. Box 9, Franklin Park NJ 08823-0009,
Tel: 908-297-7923.
Edited by Peter Kross, the first issue of Back Channels appeared in
October 1991. The issues we have are each 28 pages on lettersize stock,
three columns per page, bound inside a cover. Something like 15 percent of
each issue deals with the JFK assassination, and the rest ranges from the
Lincoln assassination, the Gulf of Tonkin, the CIA-Howard Hughes Glomar
Explorer project, intelligence at Pearl Harbor, and Hitler's gold. Half of
each issue deals with events that are more or less of current interest,
while the remainder is suited more for intelligence history buffs. Each
issue also contains capsule reviews of about a dozen books (fiction and
nonfiction), movies, and videos, and a centerfold called "BranchLines" that
features one-paragraph items of interest.
Most of the articles are short and lack footnotes, which limits their
utility for serious researchers. On the other hand, footnotes might be
inappropriate because of the quick-fix, scratch-the-surface nature of the
writing. Many readers will find this format attractive because it permits
Back Channel's broad scope and variety, while others will be left with the
impression that the content is best described as "scattered."
