American Israel Public Affairs Committee. Thirty-fifth Annual Policy Conference: Schedule of Events. Sheraton Washington Hotel, Washington DC, March 13-15, 1994. 11 pages.

This schedule of events for AIPAC's 1994 conference contains the names of 134 AIPAC staffers and participants. AIPAC is the major American lobbyist for Israel's interests. Their headquarters, a few blocks from the Capitol, is as well-guarded as many embassies, and their formal and informal political intelligence network in this country (when combined with the resources of the Anti-Defamation League and presumably Mossad) rivals all others. Some have noted that the atmosphere at AIPAC has become a bit paranoid in recent years. That's been our experience as well: in 1989 they furtively ordered NameBase, and it took us three attempts before the disks reached the person who placed the order. Later their computer security expert quizzed us on our production methods, an excessive precaution against exposure to viruses.

AIPAC is the king of the Hill among lobbyists. Congressmen who ignore Israeli interests are intimidated by AIPAC's well-deserved reputation for influencing campaign finances in the next election. AIPAC began in 1954, but it wasn't until Thomas A. Dine's tenure (1980-1993) that their membership rose from 11,000 to over 50,000, and their annual budget from $750,000 to more than $3 million. Executive director Dine took home over $200,000 in salary, expenses, and benefits in 1989.
